Mercedes powers Stormers past Blue Crabs with two-home-run night

Melvin Mercedes turned Penn Medicine Park into his stage on Friday night, launching two home runs to carry the Lancaster Stormers past the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs, 4-3. Lancaster’s bullpen then protected the lead by shutting out Southern Maryland over the final four innings, allowing the Stormers to finish off their third straight victory.

The win came with little room to spare. Lancaster led by one run when the late innings began, and the relievers made sure Mercedes’ power did not go to waste. Southern Maryland entered the night at 45-24, one of the Atlantic League’s strongest records, while Lancaster stood at 37-32, which made the one-run result even more notable for a club trying to climb in the standings.

Mercedes supplied all the margin Lancaster needed. His two-homer night gave the Stormers their offense without forcing a big rally or a string of late hits, and that changed the shape of the game from the start. In a season where Lancaster has often needed timely power and careful bullpen work to get through tight games, Mercedes delivered the first part and the pitching staff handled the second.

The Stormers were already carrying momentum from Thursday’s 4-1 win over Southern Maryland, and Friday’s result extended that run into a three-game streak. At home in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, the club again found a way to win a game decided by one swing after another, with Mercedes giving Lancaster the edge and the bullpen locking it down.

Mercedes’ offensive burst stood out even more because of his reputation on the other side of the ball. The second baseman has already been recognized by the Atlantic League for his defense, including selection to the league’s Red, White, and Blue All-Defensive Team and later being named the league’s top defensive player. On Friday, though, it was his bat that changed the game twice and helped Lancaster close out one of its most valuable wins of the summer.
