Mets purchase Blue Crabs ace Rafi Vazquez after dominant run

The New York Mets purchased the contract of right-handed pitcher Rafi Vazquez from the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs, turning a dominant Atlantic League run into a jump to Queens. Vazquez went 7-0 with a 1.01 ERA over 35.2 innings this season, and opposing hitters managed only 18 hits in that stretch.

In a Blue Crabs article titled “From the Crabs to Queens: Vazquez is Third 2026 Blue Crab to Sign with Mets,” the club identified Vazquez as the third 2026 Southern Maryland player to join the Mets organization. The Mets also put the move plainly in their own transaction note, saying they had purchased the contract of the right-hander from Southern Maryland. For Vazquez, the numbers are what forced the issue. Seven wins, no losses, a 1.01 ERA and 18 hits allowed over 35.2 innings left little room to wait, and Southern Maryland’s latest call-up by purchase gives the Blue Crabs another strong entry on their track record as a pipeline for overlooked arms headed higher.
