Miami FC signed 19-year-old Diego Mello to his first professional contract after he already logged eight USL Championship appearances and one assist in the 2026 season. The move gives the club a homegrown attacking option it has watched develop inside its own academy structure, rather than on the outside of the first-team picture.

Mello’s numbers show why the deal mattered. ESPN lists the Miami FC No. 37 forward as a 6-foot, 172-pound United States-born player born Jan. 9, 2007. In league play this season, he made one start in eight appearances, took six shots, put two on target, committed five fouls, drew eight fouls and picked up two yellow cards. Those are modest totals, but they also show a young player already trusted in real Championship minutes, not just development sessions or academy games.

That usage is the clearest sign Miami FC is treating its academy pathway as more than branding. Mello had already re-signed to an academy contract for 2026 alongside Alexander Naranjo and Brandon Bent, and this latest step moves him from that developmental tier into the full professional roster. For a club that announced its intent to join the USL Academy League in 2020, the progression fits a longer plan that has been building for several seasons, including academy coverage around its U20 team in 2025.
