Minnesota standouts shine at World Juniors Summer Showcase in Minneapolis

Fourteen Minnesotans were in the conversation for USA’s 2027 World Juniors roster, and Wyatt Cullen, Mason West and Mikey Berchild were the names that rose out of the pile at Ridder Arena. In a 42-player camp built for evaluation, not trophies, those three gave Minnesota the clearest local signal that the state’s next wave is already on the radar.

The 2025 World Junior Summer Showcase ran July 25-Aug. 2 at Ridder Arena on the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis. USA Hockey said all games and practices were staged there, the first games were played July 27 and the schedule included 11 games with teams from the U.S., Canada, Finland and Sweden. The U.S. group included five goaltenders, 14 defensemen and 23 forwards.

That mix is what makes the showcase such a sharp measuring stick. USA Hockey uses the annual camp as part of the process for selecting the roster for the IIHF World Junior Championship, so every shift carries a layer of sorting, not just competition. When 14 Minnesotans make up a chunk of the 42-player field, it says as much about the state’s pipeline as it does about any one summer performance.

Cullen, West and Berchild emerged from that traffic as the Minnesota players most worth watching next. Their presence at the top of the local list mattered because the showcase compresses the gap between prospect and decision-maker: there is little room to hide, and even less room for ordinary play to linger. USA Hockey has treated the event as a yearly checkpoint for years, with the 2024 edition held in Plymouth, Michigan before Minneapolis got the 2025 assignment.

For USHL followers, that is the clearest takeaway. Minnesota did not just send numbers to Minneapolis. It sent players who forced their way into the next round of USA Hockey's evaluation process, and Cullen, West and Berchild are now part of the early shape of the next World Juniors cycle.
