Muskegon Lumberjacks officially sign Jake Tavares after summer trade

Muskegon closed the loop on its summer deal for Jake Tavares, signing the forward on Aug. 4 after acquiring him from the Sioux City Musketeers in exchange for goaltender Will Keane on July 14. The Lumberjacks did not just add a name to the transaction log, they finished a two-step move that made Tavares an official part of the organization for 2026-27.

That matters because the signing removes the gray area that can hang over a trade in junior hockey. A player can be acquired and still be waiting for the paperwork to catch up; once the contract is signed, the club can build around him with more certainty. For Muskegon, that means Tavares is now part of the discussion for line combinations, special teams work and the forward depth chart heading into camp.

The Lumberjacks made that point clear in their Aug. 4 post: “SIGNED! We traded for him this summer, and Jake Tavares is officially signed for the 2026-27 season!” The team also teased the move on Instagram with, “Coming to the Lakeshore this season... Jacks fans, get ready for Jake Tavares,” a clue that Muskegon sees him as more than a future asset sitting on the board.

Tavares is listed by Elite Prospects as a forward, with a date of birth of Jan. 27, 2007, and a birthplace of Belmont, Massachusetts. That profile fits the way USHL teams often work the summer market: bring in a young forward, identify where he can help, then get him locked in before the season starts so the staff can sort out roles without wondering whether the player is fully in the fold.

The trade itself already carried a cost. Muskegon sent out Keane, a goaltender, to get Tavares from Sioux City, which tells you this was not a throwaway move. By following the trade with a formal signing, the Lumberjacks showed they were not simply collecting a player for the ledger. They were committing to him as part of their 2026-27 plan, a sign the organization is trying to balance an immediate push for roster stability with a longer view on developing a 2007-born forward into a usable piece.
