Muskegon Lumberjacks sign defenseman Max Dessner for 2026-27 season

Muskegon Lumberjacks added defenseman Max Dessner to their 2026-27 plans with a United States Hockey League Standard Player Development Agreement, turning a recruiting target into an official part of the blue line. The club announced the signing in an Aug. 3 Instagram post, and the photo attached to the post was taken Aug. 2 in Eden Prairie, Minnesota.

An SPDA, or Standard Player Development Agreement, is the formal step that places a player into a USHL organization’s development pipeline. For Muskegon, that means Dessner is no longer just a name on a future depth chart; he is now a committed piece of the club’s roster construction for next season, with a clearer path to camp, exhibition play and a long regular season that will test defensive reliability from the opening puck drop.

That matters on the blue line, where timing and continuity are often as important as raw talent. A defenseman signed this early gives the Lumberjacks another player to evaluate for minutes in training camp, whether as a regular, a matchup option or a depth defender who can stabilize puck movement and help on the penalty kill. In a league built around fast development and constant turnover, every early defensive commitment helps a staff map out pairings before the season begins.

The move also fits the broader summer pattern across the USHL, where teams have spent August locking in players they want to bring into the fold before camp opens.
