Nathan Paetsch emerges as finalist for Youngstown Phantoms job

Nathan Paetsch emerged as one of the finalists for the Youngstown Phantoms’ head coaching job, a move that points the USHL club toward a bench boss with AHL experience and a strong player-development background. Mike McMahon identified the Rochester Americans assistant coach as a leading name in Youngstown’s search, giving the Phantoms a candidate built around structure, teaching and a direct line to pro hockey.

The opening came after Ryan Ward left Youngstown for the Providence Bruins organization. Youngstown thanked Ward after he was named assistant coach of the Providence Bruins, while Boston’s announcement named Trent Whitfield the 14th head coach in Providence Bruins history and added Ward to the staff. Ward had spent four seasons behind the Phantoms bench, and his first season ended with a Clark Championship, the first USHL playoff championship in franchise history.

Paetsch’s resume fits that assignment. The Buffalo Sabres announced on July 11, 2023, that Paetsch and Vinny Prospal would join the Rochester Americans as assistant coaches under Seth Appert, and earlier coverage described Paetsch as a former NHL player who had spent the previous two seasons as a player development coach for the Sabres. That combination matters in junior hockey, where day-to-day bench work is tied closely to teaching habits, managing young defenders and preparing players for the next level.
