New Mexico United beats El Paso with late derby goals
New Mexico United waited until the 85th minute to break a derby that had stayed tight all night, then finished El Paso Locomotive FC off four minutes later with a second goal that turned a nervous road lead into a 2-0 Prinx Tires USL Cup win. Joseph Melto scored first at Southwest University Park in El Paso, Texas, and Zico Bailey added the insurance New Mexico needed to keep its wild-card chase alive.
The match demanded patience, and New Mexico showed it. United said it controlled most of the first-half possession and put three shots on target early, then used substitutions in the 60th minute to change the rhythm of the game. By the time Melto found the opener in the 85th minute, El Paso had spent most of the night trying to hold the line in a rivalry that always carries extra tension.

Bailey’s goal in the 89th minute mattered beyond the final score. New Mexico entered the match needing a big result to stay in contention for a Prinx Tires USL Cup wild-card berth, and the club’s format put even more pressure on the late push: if teams finished level on points, the spot would go to the second-place side with the most goals scored. The second goal gave United a cleaner margin and made the derby result count more fully in the group table.
The final minutes also showed the emotional control that often decides these matches. Kipp Keller made a late stoppage-time goal-line clearance to preserve the shutout, shutting down El Paso’s last chance to spoil the night. That composure came against a Locomotive side that had added another layer of attention with Cristo Fernández making his debut after signing on May 12 following a two-month trial. Fernández entered as a second-half substitute, but New Mexico’s finishing was sharper when the game entered its most decisive stretch.

The result was another sharp turn in a rivalry that has already produced extremes this season. El Paso beat New Mexico 4-0 in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, the heaviest defeat in the derby’s history since both clubs joined the league in 2019. The teams also drew 2-2 two months earlier, when Diego Abitia equalized in the 86th minute with a bicycle kick. This time, New Mexico owned the late moments, protected the clean sheet and kept its cup path open.
