New Mexico United loans Marlon Vargas to Union Omaha for 2026 season

New Mexico United sent Marlon Vargas on loan to Union Omaha on Monday, a move that gives the midfielder a bigger runway in USL League One while leaving United the option to bring him back before the 2026 season ends. The deal is pending league and federal approval, and it gives New Mexico flexibility if its midfield picture changes later in the year.

For Union Omaha, the move is immediate help in a promotion-minded season. The Owls said Vargas will add “more depth and dynamism” to the midfield, and sporting director Jamie Henderson described him as a “dynamic, attacking-minded midfielder on and off the ball.” Union Omaha also pointed to the fact that Vargas arrives from a New Mexico side that reached the USL Championship Western Conference Final last season.

The loan reads as more than a simple roster shuffle for New Mexico. United exercised its contract option on Vargas in November 2025 as part of a group of nine players set to return for 2026, which made him part of the club’s plans heading into the season. New Mexico then shifted him out on loan with a recall option, a structure that keeps control of a useful piece while opening a path for more regular minutes elsewhere. Vargas has already shown he can contribute in Albuquerque, where he scored six goals in 41 matches after joining the club on loan from Colorado Rapids II in 2024 and later signing for the 2025 and 2026 seasons.

Vargas arrives in Omaha with a résumé that explains why Union Omaha wanted him now. The club said he was named to the 2022 MLS NEXT Pro Best XI after a 12-goal, six-assist season, and that he produced 31 goal contributions in 51 matches for Colorado Rapids II in 2023. Union Omaha also noted his path through the Seattle Sounders academy and Tacoma Defiance, plus international experience with the United States at U-20 level and El Salvador at senior level.

That background fits where Union Omaha sees itself in 2026. The club said it is the 2021 and 2024 USL League One champion, with home matches at Morrison Stadium in downtown Omaha under head coach Vincenzo Candela. Bringing in Vargas strengthens a roster already chasing another title, while giving New Mexico a chance to turn a familiar midfielder into a more complete one before he comes back.
