New Mexico United rises in USL Championship power rankings after Week 19

New Mexico United climbed in the Week 19 USL Championship power rankings after a late 2-0 Prinx Tires USL Cup win and an unbeaten run that made the club look more complete. Detroit City also moved up after recent results, while Indy Eleven and Louisville City slipped.

Nicholas Murray’s July 13 update ranked all 25 teams in the league and carried the headline note that New Mexico United’s undefeated streak showed signs of the club coming into its own. The timing mattered because Dennis Sanchez wanted enough from New Mexico to advance as the wild card in the Prinx Tires USL Cup, and the club was trying to balance that cup chase with a league table that is already separating contenders from teams still fighting for a playoff marker. New Mexico’s official page lists Sanchez as head coach and Rio Grande Credit Union Field at Isotopes Park as its home.

The rise has a real paper trail behind it. New Mexico had already stacked up a 2-1 win over Oakland Roots SC, with Cristian Nava and Zico Bailey scoring first-half goals before a season-high crowd of 14,847 at home, then followed with Kipp Keller’s late winner in a 1-0 defeat of Charleston Battery, where Kris Shakes posted a five-save shutout. A scoreless draw at Hartford Athletic showed the run was not just about finishing, either. The results point to a team that can win at home, grind on the road and survive tight games, which is exactly how a club moves from hot streak to actual title threat.

Detroit City’s bump had a different shape, but the same logic. Le Rouge beat Louisville City FC 2-1 on May 2 and then shut out Indy Eleven 2-0 on July 19 at Keyworth Stadium, where Rafael Mentzingen and Maxi Rodriguez scored. That run, plus Detroit’s sixth win in seven league outings at home, is why the side looks more like a home-playoff team than a short-term streak club.

The separation is getting clearer as the 2026 regular season runs through 34 weeks and 375 games, from March 7 to Oct. 24. The USL Championship standings page now carries markers for clinched playoff place, homefield advantage in the playoffs and elimination from postseason contention, and the Week 19 rankings are starting to mirror that split: New Mexico and Detroit are pushing toward the top tier, while Indy and Louisville are dealing with the cost of fading form.
