The result sharpened a pattern that has followed this matchup for years. New York has now eliminated DC from the playoffs three times in five seasons, a run that makes the Empire feel less like a random obstacle and more like the one club DC still cannot reliably solve when the stakes rise. The first-round loss also landed against the backdrop of a 2026 regular season in which DC had already shown it could beat New York, making the playoff margin feel even more decisive.

That is what gives the 23-15 scoreline its weight.
