New York, Oakland, Minnesota and Austin clinch UFA Championship Weekend spots

Austin Sol, Minnesota Wind Chill, New York Empire and Oakland Spiders completed the 2026 UFA Championship Weekend field after the divisional playoff round, sending the league’s final four to Breese Stevens Field in Madison, Wisconsin, on Aug. 27-28. New York clinched by beating Boston Glory 24-21 in the East Division Championship, Oakland topped Salt Lake Shred 20-16 in the West, and Austin edged Carolina Flyers in the South to join Minnesota in the semifinals.

The bracket gives Madison an immediate headline matchup in Semifinal 1, New York Empire vs. Oakland Spiders, followed by Semifinal 2, Minnesota Wind Chill vs. Austin Sol. The UFA’s move back to Madison extends a run that now makes the city the event’s most familiar stage: Championship Weekend will be held there for a second straight year and the fifth time overall, after 2016, 2018, 2022, 2025 and 2026.

New York’s path is the one that most directly feeds the question hanging over the weekend: is the Empire still the team everyone has to beat? The answer looks like yes for now. New York’s 24-21 win over Boston, the reigning East champion, came in a game that matched the division’s top two regular-season powers and delivered the kind of result that keeps the Empire’s championship reputation intact. Ultiworld’s July 28 rankings had Boston first, Minnesota second, Oakland third and New York fourth, but the playoff field has since rearranged itself around the Empire’s road win.

Oakland’s route was narrower and a little meaner. The Spiders’ 20-16 victory over Salt Lake in the West Division Championship fit a team that has spent much of the season inside the top tier and knows how to win lower-scoring, possession-heavy games. Minnesota arrives from the opposite side of that same contender cluster, having been ranked second in late July and now paired with Austin in a semifinal that tests whether the Wind Chill’s steadier profile can withstand the Sol’s close-game edge.

Austin’s 24-23 South Division Championship win over Carolina offered the weekend’s sharpest finish and the clearest reminder that the bracket’s lower seed is not a throw-in. The Sol beat a Flyers team that went into the game at 11-3 and emerged with a one-point escape that carried them into Madison. The 2026 season began on April 24, and the final weekend will stream on watchUFA.tv, but the league’s title race has already settled into one central tension: New York’s pedigree still makes the Empire the default favorite, yet Oakland and Austin both arrive with the kind of playoff results that can break a familiar script.
