NFL and American Football Australia expand flag football in schools

The NFL and American Football Australia have pushed flag football into Australia’s school system, using Sporting Schools to place NFL Flag in classrooms rather than relying on one-off clinics. The program gives schools access to coach-delivered and teacher-led flag football for Foundation to Year 6 and Years 7 and 8, a setup built to turn first exposure into repeated participation.

That matters because Sporting Schools is already the country’s main school-sport conduit. The Australian Sports Commission says the program is an Australian Government initiative designed to help schools increase children’s participation in sport and connect them with community sporting opportunities, and it has partnered with more than 40 national sporting organisations and organisations for people with disability. American football is now part of that system, with the ASC saying it is delivering flag football in schools across Australia alongside American Football Australia and the NFL.

The pathway is more than a branding lift. Schools can order flag football equipment packs for primary and secondary campuses, and those packs come with access to an education portal for teacher resources. That gives the sport a shot at consistency, because the game is delivered through the same structures that move students from physical education into school sport and then, in some cases, into local clubs. The ASC also lists Gridiron Australia as Sporting Schools’ 39th national sporting organisation partner, another sign that the sport is being folded into a national framework rather than treated as a novelty.

The NFL is betting that framework can help it scale a game that it says is played by more than 20 million people in more than 100 countries. Flag football will make its Olympic debut at the Los Angeles 2028 Games, and the league has repeatedly pointed to school-based participation as the most efficient way to build a pipeline before that stage arrives. In Australia, that means the sport is no longer confined to exhibition events or occasional promotional appearances.

There are already local touchpoints to build on. American Football Australia says Australian flag football player Liz Lomu-Stewart has been featured in an NFL Flag promotional campaign, giving the program a homegrown face. Team Australia also played Team Mexico at the 2025 NFL FLAG Championships, a marker that Australian participation is moving beyond introduction and into international competition.

The school partnership sits inside a larger Australia push from the NFL. Melbourne will host the league’s first regular-season game in Australia on Friday, 11 September 2026, at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, with the Los Angeles Rams meeting the San Francisco 49ers. The NFL says it is committed to investing in the development of the game year-round across Australia and the Asia-Pacific region, making the classroom rollout part of a broader bid to turn a new market into a lasting football base.
