NHL Central Scouting to attend USHL combines, spotlighting prospect evaluation

NHL Central Scouting said it would attend USHL combines in a March 12, 2025 announcement, putting the league’s testing stage squarely in the NHL’s sight line. The setup is designed to do one thing before draft debates begin: compare prospects in the same room, under the same rules, before game film and live viewings separate them again.

The USHL’s combine calendar is part of that machinery. On Jan. 6, 2025, the league announced combine dates for its Development Series, and the league maintains a dedicated USHL Combines page for players and future players moving through that pathway. In league terms, the combine is not just a tryout. It is a controlled evaluation point where skating tests, physical measurements, medical or performance assessments and skill work can reveal more than a point total ever will.

That matters because junior hockey production is rarely a clean apples-to-apples comparison. Two players can post similar numbers while handling different competition levels, different ice time and different jobs on the bench. A combine creates a baseline that scouts, team analytics staffs and league evaluators can use to sort out whether a fast season was built on repeatable tools or favorable circumstances. It can also help identify a late bloomer whose testing numbers show more upside than his season-long role suggested.

The USHL added another layer to that process through Drive Hockey Analytics. The league first announced a partnership with the company on July 10, 2023, then announced another combine partnership on July 15, 2025. Drive Hockey said it tracked approximately 200 prospects during the USHL Player Development Series, while its case-study material said the event included more than 200 participating players and more than 3,000 data points per second. That kind of volume gives clubs a measurable snapshot of a prospect’s movement, workload and response to the testing environment, not just a one-time view from the stands.

The combine’s place in the draft calendar showed up again in June 2024, when the USHL said 26 league players were selected to participate in the 2024 NHL Draft Combine. On June 2, 2025, the league highlighted prospects looking to shine at the NHL Scouting Combine, and on June 17, 2025, it said the NHL Draft put the USHL talent pipeline in the spotlight.

Phase I of the USHL combine was staged in Orland Park, Illinois, another reminder that these are specific, repeatable evaluation stops rather than loose showcase weekends. By the time the draft board takes shape, the combine has already done its quietest work: turning raw prospects into side-by-side comparisons that NHL clubs can actually use.
