No. 1 JUCO prospect KJ Perry commits to BYU

KJ Perry, the nation’s No. 1 junior-college prospect, committed to BYU on Oct. 5, giving Kevin Young a headline recruiting win and a clear sign that the Cougars can still land premium talent from the NJCAA pipeline. For a high-major program, a player rated that high is usually expected to help right away, and Perry fit that profile: an older, college-tested guard with a shorter adjustment period than a typical freshman.

Perry’s ranking carried the weight in the first place because it came with production and a ready-made frame for the next level. Citrus College listed him at 6-foot-3 and 180 pounds at point guard, while Sports-Reference lists him as a 6-3, 180-pound guard from Pacific Palisades, California, and notes Hillcrest Prep in Arizona as his high school. Posts tied to the commitment said he averaged 17.5 points per game at Citrus College last season, a scoring number that helps explain why so many programs tracked him.

BYU did not land him in a vacuum. Vanquish the Foe reported that Perry picked the Cougars over offers from Kansas, Oregon, TCU, SMU, NC State, Cincinnati, Cal, Arizona State and others, which turns the commitment into more than a routine roster add. It was a national recruiting win for Young and his staff, one that came against a list of programs with plenty of resources and a strong recent track record in the portal and on the recruiting trail.

The move also fits the way elite junior-college players are used in roster construction now. Perry arrived with the kind of profile coaches chase when they need immediate backcourt help: physical maturity, scoring ability and an easier transition to the speed of major-conference basketball. BYU later made the commitment official on Nov. 12, announcing that Perry had signed and would join the Cougars in December.

That timeline matters. BYU did not just win a verbal pledge in early October; it turned that into a signed addition before the end of the fall, locking in the No. 1 JUCO player in the country for the 2025-26 roster. For other junior-college stars weighing high-major options, Perry’s choice reinforced that the JUCO route still leads to serious Power-conference opportunities, and that BYU is now selling itself as a place where proven veterans can step in and matter immediately.
