North Alabama adds women’s flag football ahead of Olympic debut

North Alabama named Abbi Munson as its first women’s flag football coach on Feb. 20 and set the program’s inaugural season for spring 2027, putting the Lions on the ground floor before the sport reaches the Olympics. The hire turned a Sept. 30, 2025 commitment into a real roster-build at a school that is betting the early start will matter.

UNA first announced on Sept. 30, 2025 that it would add women’s flag football, along with men’s and women’s track, in 2026. The expansion pushed the athletics department to 19 programs and made North Alabama one of the earliest Division I schools to commit resources to the sport. WAFF reported the Lions would be the second school in Alabama and the sixth Division I program overall to sponsor women’s flag football at the varsity level, a small club now but a meaningful one when the sport is still in the launch phase.

The recruiting move followed fast. On Feb. 2, 2026, UNA unveiled its first women’s flag football signing class, and the department said the group was headlined by the 2025 Ms. Football in Alabama. That kind of local pull matters in a sport where brand recognition is still being built from scratch and the first classes can define how quickly a program looks legitimate on the field.

The timing lines up with the larger calendar around the sport. LA28 says flag football will make its Olympic debut in Los Angeles in 2028 in a non-contact format played across two 20-minute halves. NBC Los Angeles said in May 2026 that women’s flag football was on track to become an NCAA sport before that Olympic debut, while WAFF reported in September 2025 that the NCAA had recommended the women’s game as an emerging sport that year.

For North Alabama, the advantage is simple: get in before the sport crowds. By the time flag football arrives on the Olympic stage, the Lions will already have a coach, a first signing class and seasons of recruiting runway in a state that is still early in building its varsity footprint.
