Northern Ireland hosts first pro padel event with star-studded field
Northern Ireland staged its first professional padel event at Padel54 in Moira, and the entry list made the point loudly. The FIP Silver R3 Bullpadel Cup - NI Open brought world number 15 Lucas Bergamini and world number 19 Javier Garrido to the island, with second seeds Alex Ruiz, ranked 21, and Juanlu Esbrí, ranked 24, behind them in a draw that also included former top-10 player Miguel Lamperti.
The tournament carried men’s and women’s draws, world ranking points and €18,000 in prize money under the CUPRA FIP Tour banner. On the women’s side, Letizia Maria Manquillo Alarza and Noemi Aguilar Carrillo, ranked 47 and 48, headed a field that also featured British names Catherine Rose, Aimee Gibson and Christian Medina Murphy. For British and Irish players, that mix created a rare home-soil test against top-tier opposition instead of the usual travel-heavy chase for points abroad.
Organizers framed the event as more than a standalone week in Moira. The R3 Bullpadel Cup leaderboard added a season-long layer, with players collecting points toward a £25,000 bonus fund shared among the top five performers. That structure gave the tournament a sharper edge: qualification began July 2, the main draw opened July 3 and the semifinals and finals were set for July 5, leaving little room for a soft landing.

The scale of interest matched the field. More than 500 spectators had already registered for the free event, a strong indicator that padel’s rise in Northern Ireland has moved beyond novelty. Hosting a sanctioned FIP Silver also gave the island of Ireland its first professional padel event, a milestone that matters for promoters looking to build credibility with the international tour and for local clubs trying to turn participation into a clearer pathway.
What made Moira stand out was not only the ranking depth, but the message attached to it. A UK tournament drawing Bergamini, Garrido, Ruiz, Esbrí and Lamperti, alongside established British women and men, marked a step-change in what the domestic scene can attract. For R3 Sport and Padel54, the event became a proof point for future ambitions; for Northern Ireland, it showed a market ready to host ranking-level padel with real attention, real stakes and a field strong enough to set a new benchmark.
