Oakland clinches West crown with 20-19 win over Salt Lake
Oakland’s 20-19 road win over Salt Lake on June 27 did more than preserve a slim lead in the standings. It clinched the Spiders’ first regular-season West Division crown since 2015, earned them a first-round bye, and gave them the right to host the divisional title matchup.
The result came in Week 10 of the 2026 Ultimate Frisbee Association regular season, with the opening pull at 7:00 PM MDT at Zions Bank Stadium in Herriman, Utah. It was another tight finish in a game that fit the shape of the West all season: Oakland at 7-1, Salt Lake at 5-4, and a single possession separating two teams that have spent the year near the top of the division.
Oakland’s finish carried added weight because of what both clubs have meant to the West race. Ultiworld’s preseason preview framed Oakland and Salt Lake as the division’s top two contenders, and the matchup had the feel of a playoff game before the bracket is set. Salt Lake had represented the West at Championship Weekend in two of the previous three seasons, while Oakland had not been back since 2015, the same year the Spiders last won a regular-season West title. Oakland’s franchise history stretches back to 2014, when it was founded, and its championships in 2014 and 2015 still define the standard the club has been chasing.
The path to this result also ran through last year’s head-to-head. Salt Lake beat Oakland 25-21 in Herriman on June 27, 2025, a reminder that the Shred had already proven they could handle this matchup at home. WatchUFA’s West Division championship preview also noted that Salt Lake entered 2025 with major roster turnover, with half the team new heading into the season, yet the Shred still remained a threat to finish at the top of the division. That made Oakland’s ability to close this one in Salt Lake even more significant.
The Spiders’ win now sets them up with the clearest postseason path in the division, and it comes with the final stage of the season still ahead. Championship Weekend is scheduled for August 27-28 at Breese Stevens Field in Madison, Wisconsin, and Oakland reached that conversation by winning the sort of one-goal road game that usually decides who gets to keep playing in September.
