Oakland Roots add Bruno Lapa in push for USL playoffs

Oakland Roots SC added Bruno Lapa via transfer from FC Tulsa, a direct move for a club trying to climb back into the USL Championship Playoffs before the window closes. The 29-year-old Brazilian attacking midfielder arrives with 35 goals and 20 assists in his Championship career, giving Ryan Martin a proven source of chance creation at Oakland Coliseum.

The fit is obvious in the numbers. Lapa has spent five seasons in the league and has twice earned USL Championship All-League honors, credentials that point to more than a finisher. He has repeatedly produced in the final third, whether by striking himself or by supplying the last pass in dangerous areas, and Oakland is betting that kind of output can sharpen a side that needs more end product. In a tight playoff race, one accurate through-ball, one dead-ball delivery or one shot from the top of the box can swing a result, and Lapa’s résumé suggests he can provide all three.

Oakland’s urgency also shows in the timing. FC Tulsa signed Lapa on Jan. 26 and listed him at 35 goals and 19 assists across regular season and playoffs at that point, while the league’s updated career note on Tuesday credited him with 35 goals and 20 assists. Born May 10, 1997, in Curitiba, Brazil, Lapa has the profile of a player who can settle into possession-heavy sequences quickly and give the Roots another layer against compact defenses.

The move comes with a clear league context. USL’s July 20 power rankings said Tulsa needed better final-third production, even after the club had already secured its first home playoff game with a 3-0 win over Lexington SC that locked up a top-four finish in the Western Conference the previous October. FC Tulsa moved him for an undisclosed fee, parting with a seasoned attacking piece while Oakland bought immediate attacking certainty rather than long-term depth.

Oakland’s club page lists Martin as head coach, and Tulsa’s club page lists ONEOK Field as its home, but the transfer points most directly to what Oakland lacks now: a proven creator who can change the rhythm of a match before the postseason door shuts.
