Omaha hockey roster adds USHL products, highlights junior pipeline

Omaha Athletics unveiled its 2026-27 hockey roster Friday, and the most telling detail was not a single name so much as the construction of the class. The Mavericks listed 11 newcomers from the WHL, USHL, ECHL and other junior or professional paths, a clear sign that UNO is still building around players who have already been tested against older, stronger competition.

That profile has become one of the sport’s most reliable development lanes to Division I hockey. USHL skaters in particular arrive with a pace and role familiarity that coaches trust, while players from the WHL and pro-adjacent routes often bring the physical maturity to step into college lineups sooner rather than later. For Omaha, the roster release read like a familiar recruiting map: find players who have already handled responsibility, special teams work and the nightly grind of a long junior season, then plug them into a lineup that expects immediate help.

Lincoln Hjelm is one of the names tied to that pipeline. Northstar Christian Academy announced on Nov. 28, 2022, that Hjelm had committed to the University of Nebraska Omaha, and background coverage identified him as an Omaha native who had emerged as a productive junior player. In that report, Hjelm was second on Northstar’s 16U team with 27 points, including 11 goals and 16 assists, and led the team in power-play points.

That production helps explain why Omaha stayed in the picture. Hjelm’s path, from a local standout to a Division I commit, fits the kind of player college programs keep mining from junior hockey: developed enough to contribute, still young enough to grow inside a bigger program, and already used to being depended on in key situations. The Rink Live later featured his commitment to the Division I program that first sparked his love for the game, adding another layer to a story that has followed him from youth hockey to the edge of the NCAA.

UNO’s 2026-27 class suggests that the Mavericks continue to value that blend of age, readiness and upside. The roster is not just a list of additions. It is a snapshot of how college hockey keeps feeding off the junior system, with the USHL sitting near the center of that exchange and Omaha once again leaning into the players who arrive ready to compete.
