Orlando City loans Yutaro Tsukada to Rhode Island FC for season stretch

Orlando City SC loaned Yutaro Tsukada to Rhode Island FC on July 30, sending the Tokyo native to the USL Championship for the remainder of the 2026 season. Rhode Island FC said the move was pending league and federation approval, and framed the deal as a way to add depth to the attack.

The fit is straightforward. Rhode Island FC needed another option in the final third as it pushed through the Eastern Conference race, and Tsukada arrives with the kind of profile clubs want in a short-term loan: young, rostered, and eager for a clearer runway to minutes. Orlando City lists him as a midfielder on its senior roster, while Rhode Island described him as a forward, a useful sign of the flexibility that can help a player move between lines and get on the field faster.

Tsukada reached Orlando after being picked No. 25 overall in the 2024 MLS SuperDraft. He made his MLS debut against Inter Miami CF on May 15, 2024, then later signed a First Team contract with Orlando City. For a player in that stage of development, a season stretch in USL Championship can be more than a holding pattern. It can turn into the kind of steady match work that is hard to guarantee on an MLS bench.

That is the broader lane this move fits into. MLS clubs have increasingly used loans to place younger rostered players in environments where they can play significant minutes without losing contact with their parent club. Rhode Island FC gets an attacker who has already broken into MLS, while Orlando City gets a more informed read on Tsukada’s readiness for a larger role.

What success looks like is clear for both sides. Rhode Island FC wants Tsukada available quickly, useful across the attacking front, and able to supply depth in matches where one goal can swing the table. Orlando City will be watching for minutes, consistency and evidence that the No. 34 can handle a weekly workload after his path through the SuperDraft, an MLS debut and a First Team deal. If he produces in Providence, the loan could strengthen Rhode Island’s playoff push and sharpen Orlando’s next decision on where Tsukada belongs when the 2026 season is over.
