Peter Wilson earns USL Championship Player of the Week honors
Peter Wilson turned one stoppage-time volley and one road burst into USL Championship Player of the Week honors, giving Oakland Roots SC a forward who changed the result in both Week 16 matches. The Liberian striker finished the award week with three goals and one assist, and Oakland took four points from the two games.
Wilson opened the week with a late equalizer in a 1-1 draw against Birmingham Legion FC on Wednesday, June 18, 2026, then followed it with a two-goal, one-assist performance in Oakland’s 4-3 win at Phoenix Rising FC on Saturday, June 21, 2026. The road victory carried extra weight because it was Oakland’s first away win over Phoenix since the 2022 season, a result that went well beyond a routine three points for a team trying to sharpen its playoff position.
The USL National Media Panel selected Wilson as Player of the Week for Week 16 of the 2026 regular season, and he won 73 percent of the ballot. Charleston Battery forward Miguel Berry finished second with 18 percent after a two-goal, one-assist outing in a 5-2 win over Sporting Club Jacksonville. The award, presented by Konami eFootball, underscored how decisive Wilson was across the week compared with the rest of the league’s attacking standouts.

The recognition also fits a larger pattern for Wilson, who has become the most reliable finishing threat Oakland has built around. He won the 2025 USL Championship Golden Boot with 18 goals, then earned Player of the Month honors for October after scoring six goals and two assists in the final month of the regular season. That late-season push included a six-game scoring streak, making him only the 11th player in the USL Championship era to do it and the first since Santi Moar in 2021, before he stretched the run to eight straight matches to match the league record set by Hadji Barry.
For Oakland, Wilson’s production has already altered the club’s history. His Golden Boot was the first season-long individual honor earned by a Roots player since the club joined the league in 2021, and Week 16 suggested the attack may now have a true centerpiece at exactly the moment the season tightens. If this was only a hot week, Oakland still gained four points. If it was the latest sign of a forward in full command, the Roots may have found the attacker capable of carrying the rest of the playoff push.
