Philippines padel team prepares for Asian Games debut

Philippine padel is entering the Asian Games for the first time, and the national team’s debut in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, marks a bigger shift than one tournament result. The step follows the Olympic Council of Asia’s official recognition of padel in November 2025, a decision the International Padel Federation said opened the door to the sport’s Asian Games inclusion.

That recognition placed padel inside a wider multi-sport pathway that already included the European Games in 2023, the South American Games in 2022 and the upcoming Mediterranean Games in 2026. FIP said it now represents nearly 100 national federations worldwide, a reminder of how quickly the sport has moved from local club courts into formal international structures. The 20th Asian Summer Games are scheduled for Sept. 10 to Oct. 4, 2026, with action beginning on Sept. 10 and the Closing Ceremony set for Oct. 4.

For the Philippines, the debut comes after a strong regional run that gave the program a concrete benchmark. The country won the Turkish Airlines Asia Pacific Padel Cup 2025 in Selangor, Malaysia, on Sept. 1, 2025, and later defended its Asia Pacific title, showing that the team is not arriving in Aichi-Nagoya as a novelty entry. That recent success has helped establish the Philippines as one of the Asian nations trying to turn padel’s rapid growth into competitive depth.

The challenge now is translating that momentum into disciplined doubles play under Asian Games pressure. Padel at this level depends on communication, net control, defensive patience and the ability to convert brief attacking openings, and a team new to this stage must handle elite returns and momentum swings quickly. March 2026 brought another marker when Padel FIP described the sport as a medal event at Aichi-Nagoya, adding weight to a debut that will be used to judge how far the Philippines has come and how much more investment, coaching support and player development the program can attract next.
