Phoenix Rising top Las Vegas Lights in Week 20 thriller
Phoenix Rising FC beat Las Vegas Lights FC in a high-scoring Week 20 match, and the league’s highlight package showed exactly why this rivalry keeps getting front-burner treatment. The result kept Phoenix’s momentum rolling after a 3-2 comeback over Monterey Bay FC two days earlier, a win that gave the club its 100th home regular-season contest.
That Monterey Bay match was turned by Kelvin Arase and a late own goal, a reminder that Phoenix has been finding ways to score even when the game gets messy. Jaethan Irwin added another note to the week by recording his first assist in a separate Week 20 mention, giving Phoenix more than one name to point to as the attack keeps spreading production around.

The larger pattern around Phoenix and Las Vegas has been volatile for a while. Las Vegas beat Phoenix 2-1 in a Sept. 28, 2024 meeting, the teams played to a 0-0 draw on Sept. 5, 2025, and Phoenix once punched back with a 4-0 win on June 14, 2018. In that 2018 meeting, Las Vegas hosted Phoenix for the first time and the night came as the Lights passed 100,000 fans for the season.

USL Championship had already flagged the matchup as a headline game, with its Week 20 preview on July 17 calling the slate one that featured “a nationally televised clash and one of the league’s best rivalries.” The latest result fit that billing. Phoenix did not just survive another tight West Coast fight, it turned it into another attacking showcase, the kind that can make a playoff chase look dangerous for every opponent in the path.

That is the promise and the warning in the same result. Phoenix is creating enough pressure to win these games, but the recent run of 3-2 and high-scoring outcomes also leaves the back line exposed to the kind of opponent that can punish every loose touch. If the Rising keep trading chances at this rate, they will stay entertaining and productive, but the real test will come against teams that can make them pay for the spaces this style opens up.
