Pioneer stars earn Western New York flag football honors
Pioneer’s girls flag football run earned another round of validation when Western New York all-star honors were announced June 28, with junior quarterback Ellie Edwards named the overall Player of the Year and senior lineman Lilly Kless chosen as Defensive Player of the Year.
The awards fit the shape of Pioneer’s season. The Panthers finished 2026 with their second NYSPHSAA Class C championship, a 34-6 win over Shoreham-Wading-River on June 7 that capped a perfect 19-0 season and made Pioneer the first team to win consecutive state titles in girls flag football. Before that, Pioneer had rolled through the state semifinals with a 41-0 win over Northeastern Clinton.
Edwards was the face of the offense through that stretch, and Kless gave the program its edge on defense. In the Section VI semifinals, Pioneer beat Buffalo Academy of Science 46-0, with Edwards accounting for four touchdowns and Kless producing five flag pulls, a sack and three tackles for loss. Pioneer then beat Fredonia 46-6 for the Section VI Class C championship, adding another regional title to a resume that already included a first state championship in 2025.
That earlier breakthrough came in a 13-12 overtime win over Owego Free Academy, when Pioneer became the first school from Section VI to win a state title in girls flag football. The Panthers have now compiled a 41-3 record in the program’s first three seasons, a record that has turned team success into a long list of individual honors.
The recognition also reflected the program’s broader rise under Christopher Edwards, who was named the Buffalo region Coach of the Year on June 30. Edwards has coached Pioneer’s girls team since the program began three years ago and became the school’s athletic director in 2024. The Buffalo Bills said Pioneer’s climb has come alongside a sharp expansion in the region, with Section VI girls flag football growing from 12 teams in 2022 to 61 in 2026.
Ellie Edwards’ profile has grown with the program. The Bills previously named her their Flag Football Player of the Year nominee for the Maxwell Football Club girls national award, and they highlighted her early start in a youth Bills flag league at about age 8. At Pioneer, that pipeline has produced more than wins. It has built a standard that now shows up in player-of-the-year awards as often as it does on the scoreboard.
