Pittsburgh Riverhounds add Yu Tsukanome on loan, Rhode Island FC move Clay Holstad to FC Dallas

Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC added Yu Tsukanome on loan from Seattle Sounders FC, bringing in a 25-year-old forward who set a Tacoma Defiance record with 21 goals in 31 appearances in 2025. Rhode Island FC moved Clay Holstad to FC Dallas in a separate loan that sends the first player in club history on to Major League Soccer.

The two moves landed on July 27, with Tsukanome listed in the USL Championship transfer tracker at 2:00 p.m. EDT and Holstad at 12:00 p.m. EDT. Both deals are framed as stretch-run roster management, but they address different problems: Pittsburgh is trying to add scoring punch, while Rhode Island is weighing a core midfielder’s value against the chance to test him in MLS.

For Pittsburgh, Tsukanome is the more direct attacking swing. His loan runs for the remainder of the 2026 USL Championship season, which leaves little doubt about the intent. The Riverhounds did not bring in a trial piece or a long-term project. They brought in a forward with a real production benchmark, and that 21-goal season at Tacoma Defiance is the kind of number that can change how a team approaches the final third if the finishing translates quickly.

That matters because the Riverhounds have often built around control, structure and efficiency rather than volume. Tsukanome gives them another route to goals at a point in the season when one added finisher can change whether a club is trying to survive the playoffs or threaten deeper into them. The move does not guarantee a leap in ceiling, but it does target one of the most valuable holes a USL club can fill late in the year.

Rhode Island’s move is more about player pathway and roster leverage. Holstad was not a spare part. On March 7, 2025, Rhode Island FC signed Holstad, Karifa Yao and Frank Nodarse to multi-year contract extensions after each had surpassed 3,000 minutes in the club’s inaugural season, a clear sign Holstad had become part of the team’s core. Sending him to FC Dallas for the rest of the 2026 season, with Dallas holding an option to acquire him at the end of the loan, gives him a higher-level audition and gives Rhode Island flexibility around a player it had already committed to.

Taken together, the moves show how USL Championship clubs are using the market in late July. Pittsburgh tried to buy more attacking upside with a proven scorer. Rhode Island converted a trusted starter into an MLS opportunity. In a tight stretch of the season, those are the kinds of transactions that can shape both the table and the next roster cycle.
