Rhode Island FC previews crucial road test at Birmingham Legion FC

Rhode Island FC set up its trip to Birmingham Legion FC as a true late-summer measuring stick, with the club’s match preview pointing to an Aug. 1 visit to Protective Stadium and an 8:00 PM ET kickoff. The fixture came in the middle of a dense stretch on Rhode Island’s 2026 schedule, and it carried extra weight because Birmingham had already beaten Rhode Island 3-1 in the clubs’ May 2 meeting.

Rhode Island’s attack had a fresh piece in place for the rematch. Orlando City SC loaned forward Yutaro Tsukada to Rhode Island FC through the remainder of the 2026 season, giving the roster another option just as the club prepared for Birmingham. Orlando identified Tsukada as the No. 25 overall pick in the 2024 MLS SuperDraft, and he made his MLS debut against Inter Miami in May 2024. For Rhode Island, the move added another player who could help stretch the field and create different looks in the final third on the road.

The matchup itself already had a clear recent reference point. On May 2 at Centreville Bank Stadium, Birmingham won 3-1, and the USL’s highlight description from that game credited Sebastian Tregarthen with a goal and an assist. It also noted Ronaldo Damus scored his 50th regular-season USL Championship goal in the win. Those details gave Rhode Island a precise task for the rematch: stay cleaner in midfield, keep Birmingham from turning transitions into open chances, and avoid letting Damus or Tregarthen decide the game in the same spaces again.

Rhode Island’s schedule had already placed Aug. 1 in the heart of a busy run when its January 20 schedule release listed the date on the league calendar. The club also had another Birmingham match postponed due to inclement weather earlier in the summer, adding more familiarity to a series that had become one of the season’s more layered tests.

That is what made the road trip more than a routine regular-season stop. Rhode Island had a chance to show it could impose its style away from home against a Birmingham side that had already punished it once, and Tsukada’s arrival gave the club a timely chance to change the terms of the rematch.
