Rhode Island FC signs young forward Osman Foyo from AFC Wimbledon

Rhode Island FC added forward Osman Foyo from AFC Wimbledon on a permanent transfer, giving Khano Smith another attacking piece as the club works through a 5-4-5 start to the 2026 USL Championship season. The signing was announced July 23, and Rhode Island said it still needs league and federation approval before Foyo can be fully integrated.

Foyo arrives with a profile Rhode Island has not had much room to grow on its own roster: a young, 21-year-old forward who already has senior production behind him. Born Oct. 3, 2004, in Utrecht, he is listed at 1.84 meters, or 6-foot-0, and one player database had him wearing No. 19 at AFC Wimbledon.

The numbers that make him interesting are from his time away from Wimbledon. AFC Wimbledon said in its Jan. 30, 2025 signing announcement that Foyo had scored 12 goals and added two assists while on loan at Chelmsford City. That output matters in a league like the USL Championship, where away trips are long, defensive blocks are compact and final-third chances often have to be finished quickly. Rhode Island is betting that Foyo brings an end product it can use now, not just later.

His path also suggests why the club sees both upside and utility. AFC Wimbledon said Foyo came through the youth systems at Chelsea and Norwich City before breaking into senior football. That background points to a forward who has been trained in a more technical, possession-oriented environment but has already had to prove himself in the physical, direct demands of lower-league senior soccer. For Rhode Island, that can translate into a depth move with room to become more than depth if the adaptation is quick.

The timing gives the move more edge. Rhode Island FC entered 2026 after winning the Eastern Conference in 2024, but the club sat eighth in the East at 5-4-5 when that standings snapshot circulated. Center back to the back line is not the issue; the question is whether Foyo can help sharpen a final third that has not separated Rhode Island from the pack as cleanly as it did a year ago. His transfer from AFC Wimbledon suggests the club believes the answer may be yes.
