Rubín's early goal lifts El Paso Locomotive past Oakland Roots 1-0

Rubio Rubín scored in the ninth minute and El Paso Locomotive FC beat Oakland Roots SC 1-0 at Southwest University Park, a game decided by the kind of early break that can change everything. Once El Paso struck first, Oakland spent the night trying to recover while the Locomotive protected the edge through the final whistle.

That opener was the whole story. A goal inside the first 10 minutes lets one team settle into its shape and forces the other to chase, and El Paso used that advantage exactly as it wanted. No second goal ever arrived, but none was needed. Rubín’s finish stood up as the difference in a match where clean margins mattered more than style points.

Rubín has become a central part of that attack since El Paso signed the Guatemala international on Dec. 30, 2025. At the time of the move, the club pointed to his four goals and three assists in the 2025 season with Charleston Battery as proof he could produce immediately, and his ninth-minute strike against Oakland was the kind of return the Locomotive envisioned.

The match was available on ESPN+ for U.S. viewers and on YouTube internationally, another standard league fixture with a wide audience. For El Paso, the bigger point was on the field: when the first chance falls early, the Locomotive now look capable of defending the lead with discipline and taking three points from games that would have been draws, or worse, in a tighter spell.
