Sacramento Republic signs former Sporting KC defender Tim Leibold

Sacramento Republic FC signed former Sporting Kansas City defender Tim Leibold to a 25-day contract, bringing in the German left back for immediate depth on the USL Championship back line. The club said he would be available for selection Aug. 1 and framed the move as “adding to the backline,” a clear sign this was about speed and fit as much as name value.

Leibold arrives with the kind of resume Sacramento targeted for a short-term roster move. Sporting Kansas City signed the 29-year-old on Jan. 12, 2023, to a three-year MLS contract through 2025 with an option for 2026, calling out more than 20 goals and 40 assists in nearly 300 professional appearances in Germany. Sacramento’s roster page lists him as a defender, and ESPN also has him in that role for Republic FC.

The profile fits a club looking for usable minutes now. Sporting KC’s roster page lists Leibold at 5-foot-9 and 159 pounds, born Nov. 30, 1993, and wearing No. 14 during his time in Kansas City. That blend of experience and range should help Sacramento on the left side, where a short-term deal can cover for injuries, manage minutes, or tighten a playoff chase without locking the club into a longer commitment.

The contract length tells the rest of the story. A 25-day deal gives Sacramento roster flexibility, and it limits the risk if Leibold does not settle quickly or if the club’s needs change again before the stretch run. At the same time, the move gives Leibold a clean reset after an injury-hit run in MLS.

Transfermarkt’s injury history lists a chest injury in the 2025/26 season, knee problems in 2024/25 and a muscle injury in 2022/23. A separate Transfermarkt note said he missed 27 games with injuries over the previous two seasons when he moved to MLS, part of a stretch that slowed his availability after arriving in Kansas City.

For Sacramento, that history makes the timing more understandable, not less. The Republic are buying experience, left-side cover and a proven pro who has played across Germany and MLS, all on a deal short enough to fit a club looking for an immediate defensive lift without a long-term roster gamble.
