Sioux City Musketeers sign defenseman Nathan Watson for 2026-27 season

Sioux City added Nathan Watson to its roster for the upcoming USHL season, giving the Musketeers another defenseman they believe can help drive play from the back end. In an Instagram post announcing the move, the club said, “Nathan Watson joins our D-corps for the upcoming season,” and identified the signing as a Standard Player Development Agreement.

The timing matters because Sioux City already knew Watson well. The Musketeers had previously selected him in the USHL Phase II Draft, and that earlier post identified him as a defenseman out of Quebec and linked him to Deerfield Academy. Watson’s addition now gives Sioux City a second look at a player the staff had already targeted before the roster took shape for 2026-27.

What Sioux City is bringing in is not a stay-at-home defender built around reach and punishment. The Musketeers described Watson as “a dynamic, offensive-minded defenseman who moves the puck extremely well,” and the numbers back that up: 42 games played, 10 goals, 25 assists and 35 points in the season the team cited. For a junior defenseman, that scoring line is the headline. It says Sioux City is adding offense from the blue line, not just another body for the depth chart.

Watson also arrives with a profile that fits that read. Neutral Zone lists him as a 5-foot-11, 175-pound defenseman from Mascouche, Quebec. Elite Prospects shows a verified Deerfield Academy profile for Watson, while also listing a separate Nathan Watson tied to Pomfret School in the 2022-23 USHS-Prep season, a reminder that Sioux City’s signing is the Deerfield Academy defenseman from Quebec.

That makes Watson look more like a developmental upside bet than a pure depth move, though his production gives him a path to real minutes if he translates quickly to the USHL pace. Sioux City is building for a league that had 16 teams chasing the Clark Cup in the USHL’s 45th Anniversary Season, and Watson fits the kind of roster move that can pay off fast if the offense follows him north to junior hockey.
