South Africa dodgeball nationals in Cape Town, World Cup spots on the line

South African dodgeball’s national championships turned Cape Town into a selection stage on June 20 and 21, with athletes competing not only for a domestic title but for places on the squad headed to Thailand for the World Cup. The tournament was broadcast live from Court 1 and Court 2, making every match part of an open tryout as much as a championship weekend.

The live streams, including Day 1 Court 1, Day 1 Court 2 and Day 2 Court 2, showed a two-day format built around constant evaluation. A June 20 post flagged that play was already underway when the event was promoted, underscoring the pace of the nationals and the pressure on players trying to stand out before selectors finalize the national-team picture. In a sport where a single tournament can determine who gets the next international call, the setup in Cape Town gave the event extra weight from the first whistle.

That pressure ties directly to the bigger international calendar. The World Dodgeball Federation has set the 11th World Championships for Bangkok, Thailand, from December 5 to 13, 2026, and says the field is expected to include representation from all six continents. The federation also says the 2024 World Championships in Graz, Austria, drew more than 1,400 athletes and officials from 36 countries, making it the largest international gathering in the sport’s history at that time. Bangkok will also feature six competitive divisions and include workshops on governance, coaching, officiating, event delivery and organizational development.

For South Africa, the nationals carried extra significance because DodgeballSA describes itself as the country’s first dodgeball sporting association. That places the Cape Town weekend at the center of a still-developing national structure, where one event can decide both a championship and the makeup of the next international roster. With Court 1 and Court 2 running live in front of a wider audience, the selection process was visible in real time, and the path from Cape Town to Bangkok ran through every point played over the two days.
