Southern Football League launches 14-game women’s flag football season

The Southern Football League posted July 22 that it will stage an all-women’s flag football tournament built around a 14-game regular season running from June into mid-August, with playoffs in August. That schedule is the clearest sign yet that the women’s game is moving beyond showcase weekends and into a repeatable competition calendar with standings, postseason stakes, and a longer runway for players.

The league’s season plan is the core of that shift. A 14-game slate gives coaches more than a one-off tournament to work with, and it creates enough repetition for players to sharpen timing and chemistry over the course of a summer. The August playoff finish also gives the schedule a clean end point, something women’s flag football has often lacked when events have been limited to short exhibitions or isolated invitationals.

The league’s quick facts page fills in how the structure is being built. It says there is one franchise per Southern California county and splits the circuit into a Northern Conference and a Southern Conference. The Northern Conference includes Los Angeles County, San Bernardino County, Ventura County, and Santa Barbara County. The Southern Conference includes Orange County, San Diego County, Riverside County, and Imperial County.

The same page says games are played with seven players on the field in four 15-minute quarters, with eligible players ranging from 18 to 50. It also references a 2026 All-Star Tour, which pushes the project beyond a single season launch and toward a broader slate of league-run events. For players, that means the pathway is not just a tryout or one weekend of exposure; it is a season, a conference structure, and a chance to stay in front of evaluators across multiple dates.

The league’s plan had already been outlined in January, when Southern California’s new women’s professional flag football setup was introduced with the same June-to-August season structure. That timing mattered because it showed the league was not assembling a late-summer one-off, but laying out a schedule months in advance. The wider sport has been gaining ground too, after NFL clubs voted in December 2025 to support the launch of a professional flag football league.

For women’s flag football, the July 22 post signals a more durable competitive model. The league is not just creating a stage for a single weekend. It is building a season.
