St. Lawrence adds women’s flag football to varsity sports lineup

St. Lawrence University added women’s flag football and women’s triathlon to its varsity lineup in Canton, New York, raising the Saints to 37 varsity programs. The school’s athletics pages now include dedicated pages for both sports, a clear signal that flag football is being treated as a full varsity offering rather than a club experiment.

The move lands at a moment when women’s flag football is pushing deeper into the NCAA structure. The NCAA voted at the 2026 convention to add flag football to its Emerging Sports for Women program, a step that puts the sport on a formal path toward championship status. ESPN put the number of NCAA women’s flag football teams at about 40 when that vote was made, underscoring how small the college footprint still was even as the sport kept expanding.

For St. Lawrence, the decision does more than add two logos to an athletics page. It broadens the recruiting pitch for student-athletes who want to play one of the fastest-rising women’s sports in college and for families looking for programs with a clearer route to varsity development and scholarship opportunities. The university framed that ambition in a social post that said, “Now there are more ways than ever to compete like a Saint,” and described the additions as “two new sports programs that are gaining momentum nationwide.”

USA Triathlon also marked the addition, a reminder that St. Lawrence is pairing flag football with another emerging women’s sport instead of treating the hire as a one-off. That alignment matters in the larger college-sports market, where schools are trying to get ahead of demand before women’s flag football becomes even more entrenched at the national level.

St. Lawrence is not alone in making that calculation. Lawrence University has also announced a women’s flag football program and later said its inaugural season will be in spring 2028 while it searched for a head coach. At St. Lawrence, the addition fits a department that already spans ECAC Hockey for NCAA Division I hockey and the Liberty League for NCAA Division III programs, and it gives the Saints another varsity lane as the women’s game keeps moving from novelty to legitimacy.
