St. Louis CITY2 acquires Nighte Pickering from Las Vegas Lights FC

St. Louis CITY2 acquired forward Nighte Pickering from Las Vegas Lights FC, giving the MLS Next Pro club a 21-year-old former U.S. youth national team attacker under contract through the end of the 2026 season. CITY2 introduced him with a social post that read, “Welcome to STL, Nighte! We have acquired forward Nighte Pickering via transfer from USL Championship side, Las Vegas Lights FC.”

Las Vegas announced the transfer on July 17 and kept a percentage of any future move involving Pickering, a detail that shows how the club chose to cash in on a player who still carries upside. Pickering produced two goals and one assist in 11 appearances across all competitions this season, a modest return for a forward once projected as a higher-ceiling prospect. He joined Las Vegas in 2025 from Memphis 901 FC, and his roster profile lists him as a forward from Birmingham, Alabama, born Jan. 26, 2005.

For Las Vegas, the deal is a clean example of the USL Championship’s current business model around young attackers: if the final step toward consistency does not come quickly enough, the club can move the player, keep a sell-on piece and free the pathway for the next prospect. Pickering never lacked pedigree, but the output in Las Vegas did not fully match the profile. CITY2 is betting that a different environment, more continuity and a developmental setting built to accelerate young players can unlock the same tools in a more productive way.

That bet fits the wider structure around MLS Next Pro, which was launched in 2022 to bridge the gap between MLS NEXT and first-team soccer and has already produced 200 MLS first-team signings. Young attackers across the lower divisions have often used a change of scenery to restart momentum, and USL has seen that pattern with players such as Milan Iloski, whose rise out of Orange County SC helped push him toward a higher-level move. Pickering now gets a similar reset, but with CITY2 he will be trying to turn promise into production inside an MLS development pipeline rather than under the heavier pressure of a USL Championship fight for results.
