Staten Island Giants win first Junior Olympics gold in flag football

The Staten Island Giants came home from Des Moines, Iowa, with the first gold medal in program history after winning AAU Junior Olympics flag football against a field that drew nearly 200 teams from across the country. The championship games were played at Mediacom Stadium, capping a tournament that ran July 31 through August 2, 2026.

That result matters beyond a single trophy. The Giants did not beat a local bracket and collect hardware in a small field; they won at the 60th Annual AAU Junior Olympic Games, a stage AAU has kept in Greater Des Moines for 2023, 2026 and 2030. Staten Island has already been treated as one of the strongest flag football hotbeds in the country, and the Giants’ title gives that reputation a hard number to point to.
