Team Minnesota shines at Summer Open, wins Men’s Open Doubles title

Carlos and Ryan won the Men’s Open Doubles title to headline Team Minnesota’s haul at the 2026 Summer Open, a weekend that featured more than 230 matches at Prairie Athletic Club in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. The event ran Aug. 7-8 and gave Minnesota players a busy stage across open, singles and junior divisions.

Team Minnesota said 10 players competed at the annual tournament, including three juniors, Dan Peloquin, Mitch Peloquin and Vincent Peloquin. That depth showed up on the results sheet: John Janosik won Men’s B Singles, while Dan Peloquin took the juniors’ round robin. The mix of finishes covered both sides of the program, from adult bracket play to the younger players working through round robin competition.

Matt Schmekel added another Minnesota result in Men’s A Singles after bicycling 250 miles over four days to reach the tournament. His win gave the team a third singles bracket victory to go with the doubles title and the junior round robin, a spread that made the weekend more than a one-division success. With Carlos and Ryan at the top of the open doubles draw, Janosik in Men’s B Singles and Dan Peloquin in the juniors, Minnesota finished with wins at several levels of the field.

The annual Summer Open also reflected the scale of racquetball activity around the event. Registration had been live before the weekend, and entries were set at $40 with a free T-shirt and lunch included. That kind of turnout helps explain the match volume, and the 230-plus match count suggested a full schedule that kept players moving through the Prairie Athletic Club courts from the first round into the finals.

For Team Minnesota, the results pointed to a program that produced winners across age groups and skill levels. Ten players made the trip, three of them juniors, and the team returned with titles in Men’s Open Doubles, Men’s A Singles, Men’s B Singles and the juniors’ round robin. That range gave the Summer Open a clear Minnesota imprint and left the state group with a strong showing heading into the next stretch of racquetball events.
