Tennessee offers NJCAA champion Esmeralda Enriquez after MVP season

The sophomore guard helped the Gila Monsters beat New Mexico Junior College 57-51 for the NJCAA Division I women’s basketball national title at McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana, then received a Tennessee offer.

Eastern Arizona’s victory on March 30 delivered the first women’s basketball national championship in school history and the program’s first national title in any sport since its volleyball team won in 1991. Enriquez was at the center of it, finishing as the Most Valuable Player of the NJCAA Division I Women’s Basketball National Championship Tournament and later earning NJCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Player of the Year honors on April 10. She was also named a first-team All-American after leading Eastern Arizona to the NJCAA’s No. 1 ranking this season.

Enriquez averaged a team-high 15.7 points per game for Eastern Arizona, along with 4.3 rebounds and 1.7 steals, while shooting 44.8 percent from 3-point range. Before her breakout season in Thatcher, Arizona, she played at North Idaho College in 2024-25 under the name Esmeralda Gallindo, where she produced 18.2 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game over 27 games and shot 39.4 percent from deep.

The Tennessee offer, which Enriquez revealed publicly on April 1, came amid interest from Southern Mississippi, Fordham, Tennessee State, Seattle University and Appalachian State University.

Tennessee’s interest arrived during a full-scale reset under coach Kim Caldwell. The Lady Vols finished 16-14 in her second season, and by April 6 seven of eight potential returners had entered the transfer portal, leaving Tennessee without a returning player from the previous roster.
