Tri-C names Ryan Meier head coach ahead of NJCAA season

Cuyahoga Community College moved to stabilize its men’s basketball program by naming Ryan Meier as its next head coach, giving the Triceratops a veteran college voice before the NJCAA season shifts into fall preparation. Tri-C said Meier was hired on Aug. 10, and the move puts a coach with 304 total wins into charge of a roster that must be shaped quickly in junior college basketball.

Meier arrives in Cleveland after returning to his alma mater, Palomar College, where Tri-C said he served as associate head coach. Palomar’s men’s basketball coaches page also lists him as an assistant coach, while a Cal State San Marcos coaching page identifies him as a volunteer assistant coach on that program’s men’s basketball staff. The combination points to a résumé built almost entirely around the college game, with repeated stops that fit the fast turnover and constant roster management that define NJCAA basketball.

For Tri-C, the hire gives the program a clear reset point. The 2026-27 Triceratops men’s basketball coaches page already lists Meier as head coach, signaling that he is the person tasked with setting the tone for the upcoming season. His public X profile also identifies him as head coach of Cuyahoga Community College men’s basketball in Cleveland, Ohio, reinforcing that the transition is complete and the new era is already underway.

The timing matters. With recruiting still active and preseason work approaching, Meier’s first job will be to communicate a style, hold together current personnel and identify players who can fit quickly into a system that demands immediate production. In two-year basketball, a head coach has to do more than draw up plays. He has to build trust fast, evaluate talent on the fly and give prospects a path to the next level, all while replacing players who may move on after a single season.

Tri-C’s decision also signals what the college values at the top of the program: continuity, recruiting energy and day-to-day development.
