UBC Quadball announces August schedule with drop-in session at Ross Milbourne Sports Hall
UBC Quadball put its August calendar in front of players with one clear invitation: a drop-in session at Ross Milbourne Sports Hall on Aug. 6 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The setup matters because it gives first-timers a low-commitment way into the sport and gives returning students a fixed place to reconnect before the academic year starts crowding the calendar.
The club’s post framed the month as “sessions + events,” with every listed activity tied to Ross Milbourne Sports Hall. That kind of at-a-glance scheduling is exactly how university quadball programs keep their rosters warm through the summer. A drop-in slot is the easiest entry point in the sport: no long-term commitment, no guesswork about where to go, just a time window and a venue on the University of British Columbia Vancouver campus.
The timing fits UBC Quadball’s broader pattern. UBC Recreation says the club was founded in 2010 as an AMS Club and now competes in Quidditch Canada as a UBC Thunderbirds Sport Club. UBC Recreation describes Thunderbirds Sport Clubs as a competitive sport program for UBC student-athletes, home to 15 sports and 17 teams, which puts quadball inside a structured campus pathway rather than as an isolated club activity. For a program like that, August is not dead space. It is roster-building time.

UBC Recreation has also spent years explaining the sport’s identity and evolution. On Jan. 23, 2023, it published an explainer on why quidditch became quadball, and its Quadball SC page describes the game as blending elements of rugby, dodgeball, handball and flag football. That mix is part of the appeal for newcomers: the rules borrow from familiar sports, but the pace and roles are their own. On Aug. 29, 2022, UBC Recreation said the UBC Thunderbird Quidditch Sports Club would restart practices in September and was looking for new members, a reminder that preseason recruitment has long been part of the club’s playbook.
The August schedule keeps that approach simple. Ross Milbourne Sports Hall is the address, the drop-in window was Aug. 6 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., and the message to students was plain: come through, try quadball, and see if the sport fits before the term gets rolling.
