UFA playoff field shrinks to final eight after round one

Just eight teams remain in the 2026 UFA title chase after the first-round playoff games on July 25-26 trimmed a 12-team field to a final eight. Alex Rubin’s July 28 Buzzer Beater column put the reset in plain terms, and the bracket now shifts from survival mode to divisional championship play.

The sharpest result from the opening weekend came in the West, where Salt Lake Shred outlasted the Seattle Cascades 22-20. That two-point margin was enough to send Salt Lake into a divisional championship game against the Oakland Spiders on Aug. 8, a matchup that already separates the teams that merely advanced from the ones that showed they can win a possession game under postseason pressure.

The East followed a different script, but it also reinforced how unforgiving this bracket can be. WatchUFA’s first-round coverage marked the DC Breeze against the New York Empire as a special Saturday matinee at 2:00 p.m. ET, and the Empire ended DC’s season for the third time in five years. That is the immediate test now for the teams still standing. Rubin had previewed the playoff race on July 20, then asked a week earlier who the title favorite was when, as he wrote, any of the top teams could beat each other. Round one did little to settle that question. Salt Lake’s narrow escape and New York’s familiar finish over DC only made the race tighter, which is exactly what the UFA bracket looks like when the margins start to matter most.
