University of Illinois quadball brings friendly match to Tolono library

The Tolono Public Library District will host a family-friendly quidditch tournament Friday, July 31, from 5 to 7 p.m., and the University of Illinois quadball team has already helped build it from the ground up by teaching library staff how to play. Some Illinois players will join the event itself, turning the library into a beginner-friendly entry point for a sport most people still know by its old name.

The listing frames the afternoon as a celebration of Harry Potter’s birthday, but the more important detail is how much of the game will be taught before the first play. The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign’s official campus club is the Illini Ridgebacks Quadball Team, and its involvement gives Tolono a direct line to players who can walk families, students and curious first-timers through a sport that can look chaotic until someone explains the hoops, balls and positions.

That matters because the sport’s modern identity has been in place since July 2022, when the International Quidditch Association, US Quidditch and Major League Quidditch adopted the name quadball worldwide. Reuters reported at the time that the change was meant partly to avoid trademark issues and to distance the sport from J.K. Rowling’s comments, while NPR noted that the new name points to the four balls on the field and the four positions in the game. Tolono’s listing still uses quidditch, but the event itself fits the newer quadball model: hands-on, explanatory and built to bring in newcomers rather than reward insiders.

Central Illinois already has enough quadball activity to make that outreach feel grounded, not experimental. Experience Champaign-Urbana said in March 2026 that quadball returned to Rantoul for a national qualifier, bringing 19 college and adult club teams to the Rantoul Family Sports Complex on March 7 and 8. WAND-TV also reported in March 2025 that a Champaign County national quadball qualifier drew 350 participating athletes. With that kind of regional footprint, a library event in Tolono looks less like a novelty and more like a practical pipeline from fandom programming to actual play.
