U.S. U18s finish second after 8-1 loss to Canada in Hlinka Gretzky Cup final

Canada handed the U.S. Under-18 Men’s Select Team an 8-1 loss in the Hlinka Gretzky Cup final in Edmonton, closing an American tournament run that ended with silver and a 4-0-0-1 record. The score line cut against a team that had looked sharp all week, but it also showed how quickly elite junior hockey can flip when pace and execution are pushed to the top end.

The Americans reached the championship game after beating Czechia, Finland, Germany and Slovakia in succession. USA Hockey staged the tournament Aug. 3-8 in Edmonton, Alberta, with preliminary-round games at Rogers Place and Downtown Community Arena, and set the final for Aug. 8 at 5 p.m. MT, 7 p.m. ET on NHL Network. By the time Canada and the U.S. met for gold, the gap was no longer about talent on paper. It was about who could impose speed, structure and finish for 60 minutes.

The U.S. had produced plenty of offense before the final. Gavin Burcar opened the event with a hat trick in a 6-4 win over Czechia, then Ethan Sung scored twice in a 4-1 victory over Finland. In the semifinal, Nash Roed scored three goals in a 5-2 win over Slovakia, with Burcar again contributing as Team USA moved into the title game. Those performances carried the Americans through the bracket and made the final result even more abrupt.

That is the development snapshot USHL readers will recognize. Roed skated for Waterloo, and Sung was tied to Sioux Falls for the 2026-27 season, giving the U.S. roster a clear USHL footprint on a 23-player team that USA Hockey announced July 27. Thirteen players on the roster carried USHL ties, and they were tested in one of the sport’s most compressed, high-stakes stages for 17- and 18-year-olds.

USA Hockey has said the Hlinka Gretzky Cup has been played every August since 1991 under names including the Phoenix Cup, Pacific Cup, Junior World Cup and Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament. The Americans entered Edmonton as defending champions after winning the 2025 event, but Canada’s final-game push exposed how narrow the margin remains between a strong week and a result that resets the standard.
