USA rallies past France, China escapes Austria at junior worlds

USA’s mixed team had to grind through France before its pool stayed intact, trailing 7-6 before Jonah Yang and Bodhi Weston helped spark a 6-1 run that sent the Americans to 3-0 in pool play. The result landed on a day when open division pool play reached its halfway point, the field began moving into power pools, and the first teams were already being knocked out of title contention.

China had a far shakier road, but it found a way out of Austria’s hands in the game’s final moments. Austria twice pushed ahead late and held an 11-10 edge before China forced a turnover, then finished the comeback 12-11 on universe point. Huqianqai Hu continued to pile up production for China, entering the day as the division’s assist leader with 16. Switzerland handled Hong Kong in the other mixed result that mattered for the bracket picture.

Pool B was already turning unforgiving. Hungary blanked Ireland 13-0, Colombia beat Spain 13-7, and Australia edged Mexico 11-9 in the pool’s tightest game. Mexico now may need to beat Hungary to stay alive, a reminder of how quickly one loss can turn a contender into a team chasing survival.

The broader tournament context only sharpened that pressure. WJUC 2026 is being played July 11-18 in Logroño, Spain, at Ciudad Deportiva Pradoviejo, with 47 teams from 26 countries, 1,045 players and 84 games on the schedule. More than 1,200 participants are in Logroño for eight days of junior ultimate, and the event opened with the Parade of Nations and Opening Ceremony after the first rounds were already underway.

The bracket squeeze comes with recent history attached. At WJUC 2024 in Birmingham, the USA won gold in Open and Mixed, while France took Women’s gold and silver in Open. That pedigree is part of why every late-turn possession now carries extra weight: the programs that know how to survive these rounds are already separating themselves, and the ones that hesitate are running out of room.
