USHL confirms Fall Classic schedule, Chicago set to host showcase opener

The USHL locked in its Fall Classic schedule on July 23, putting Chicago and Blackhawks Ice Center at the center of the league’s preseason runway from Sept. 16-20, 2026. The first matchup detailed in the rollout sent the Sioux City Musketeers against Green Bay on Sept. 16, giving one of the league’s opening nights a concrete pairing and travel plan before the 2026-27 season begins to tilt into view.

The schedule release mattered because the Fall Classic is the league’s first real checkpoint, not just an early event on the calendar. USA Hockey described the Fall Classic as the kickoff weekend for all 16 USHL teams, and in 2024 it drew 86 youth teams across four tournaments in Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania, along with hundreds of scouts, coaches and executives. That combination of league games and heavy evaluation traffic has made the event a key stop for college recruiters, USA Hockey personnel and NHL staff tracking junior talent.

Chicago’s role had already been set in February, when the USHL announced the city would host the 2026 Fall Classic at Blackhawks Ice Center, home of the Chicago Steel. The league then followed with its full 2026-27 schedule on June 23 before returning on July 23 to clear up the Fall Classic weekend itself. Chicago, which the city says is the third-largest in the United States with a population of nearly three million, gives the league a major market with the arena infrastructure and travel access that showcase events require.

The rollout also gave teams immediate summer reference points. Cedar Rapids RoughRiders and Youngstown Phantoms both reacted publicly on social media after the schedule went live, underscoring how the announcement quickly became part of their preseason messaging. A local preview of Sioux City’s slate added more texture, noting that the Musketeers would open with a pair of games at Blackhawks Ice Center and start against Green Bay on Sept. 16.

The timing fits the league’s recent pattern of using the Fall Classic as an early marker for the season ahead. The USHL promoted 2025 Fall Classic ticket sales on Aug. 18, 2025, and the Chicago Steel had already referenced Fall Classic dates in a July 15, 2025 release while finalizing its 2025-26 schedule. With Chicago confirmed as host and the weekend dates now in place, the league has its first major measuring stick for roster battles, prospect evaluation and the opening stretch of junior hockey in 2026-27.
