USHL sends 14 players to U.S. Under-17 Select Team

Fourteen players with USHL ties made the 20-man U.S. Under-17 Men’s Select Team for the 2026 Under-17 Four Nations Tournament, a haul that gives the league 70 percent of the roster and underlines how early elite American talent is being identified.

USA Hockey announced the team on July 3, and the group will head to Chomutov, Czechia, for the tournament Aug. 15-19. The U.S. will face Czechia, Slovakia and Switzerland, with the roster built from the USA Hockey Boys National 16 Player Development Camp.

The selection mix is heavily tilted toward skaters. The U.S. roster includes 12 forwards, six defensemen and two goalies, a balance that reflects the camp’s role as a first major national-stage checkpoint for players in this age group. For USHL organizations, landing 14 of those selections is more than a recruiting note. It is another snapshot of where the league’s development footprint reaches before players ever arrive for a full junior season.

That pipeline matters because USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program plays in the USHL, the only Tier I junior hockey league in the United States. The league has long served as a bridge between youth hockey and the sport’s highest domestic development track, and Under-17 recognition often comes before USHL ice time, NCAA attention and future national-team opportunities.

The tournament itself has already shown how quickly those prospects can turn into results. Last year, Team USA finished second with a 3-0-0-1 record, then fell to Czechia in the championship game at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Michigan. The U.S. entered that event as the defending champion after winning the previous year’s tournament in Slovakia, a reminder that the age-group race at the top of the international ladder can shift fast from one spring to the next.

For the USHL, the number is the story: 14 players tied to the league on a 20-player national select roster. That concentration speaks to the league’s reach across the American development system and its continued place at the center of USA Hockey’s talent pipeline.
