USHL unveils 2026-27 schedule for milestone 25th season

The United States Hockey League unveiled a 2026-27 schedule built to mark its 25th season as USA Hockey’s only Tier I junior league, and it starts with one of the circuit’s biggest stage settings: the 11th annual USHL Fall Classic in Chicago from Sept. 16-20, 2026. All 16 teams will play a 62-game, cross-conference slate, and the regular season will close Saturday, April 3, 2027, with every team in action.

The opening week already points to the league’s blend of development and showcase value. The Chicago Steel will play their first game in USG Arena during the Fall Classic, giving the franchise a debut moment in its new west-side home at Blackhawks Ice Center. The Madison Capitols will follow with their first game at LEGACY20 Arena at DeForest Yards on Oct. 17 against Chicago, another facility change that gives the 25th season a visible new backdrop in a key market.

The calendar also preserves the league’s biggest neutral-site events. The American Cup powered by Wegmans is set for Dec. 3-4 in Rochester, New York, with Muskegon and the 2026 Anderson Cup champion Youngstown Phantoms as the featured clubs. The Frosty Cup follows on Jan. 20-21, 2027, in Frisco, Texas, where Tri-City and Des Moines will meet at the Comerica Center. Those dates give the USHL showcase weekends that stretch beyond traditional home-and-away series and put scouting traffic, recruiting exposure and fan reach in the center of the schedule.

Beyond the headline events, the first full weekend after the Fall Classic brings a heavy burst of league play. Waterloo will visit Fargo, Des Moines will go to Omaha, Sioux Falls will travel to Tri-City, and the NTDP U-18 team will play at Muskegon on Sept. 25. Sioux City and Cedar Rapids are both set for home openers on Sept. 26, underlining how quickly the league moves from showcase to grind once the season starts.

The schedule lands in a league that continues to sell its track record as a development pipeline. USHL background materials say more than 800 alumni are on NCAA Division I rosters, more than 50% of NCAA Division I men’s hockey players and nearly 25% of NHL players have USHL experience, and the league has produced more than 285 direct NHL Draft picks since 2020. Nine of the last 10 Hobey Baker Award winners also came through the league, with names such as Macklin Celebrini, Adam Fantilli, Dryden McKay, Cole Caufield, Scott Perunovich, Isaac Howard and Ryan Suter illustrating the range of talent that has moved through it. With Glenn Hefferan in his third year as commissioner after receiving a multi-year extension in April, and with the USHL deepening its collaboration with the NHL and USA Hockey while also exploring West Coast expansion, the 2026-27 calendar reads like a milestone season with the next one already in view.
