USL Championship Players’ Shield crowns league’s best regular-season team

The Players’ Shield goes to the USL Championship club with the best regular-season record, and Louisville City FC turned that race into a milestone by winning it in 2024 and again in 2025. In a league split between a long league campaign and a single-elimination postseason, that trophy is not a side note. It is the first silverware of the season, the clearest reward for staying sharp from opening day through the final whistle of the regular season.

Louisville’s first Shield arrived on Oct. 5, 2024, when Jake Morris scored a stoppage-time equalizer in a 2-2 draw at Indy Eleven and pushed LouCity clear in the standings. That result closed a regular season strong enough to earn Danny Cruz the USL Championship Coach of the Year award, and the league framed the run as one of the greatest regular seasons in its history. It was the kind of finish that made the Shield feel earned over months, not merely collected because the calendar said the regular season was over.

Louisville did it again on Oct. 11, 2025, sealing its second consecutive Players’ Shield with a 1-0 win over Miami FC. The league later described the club as the first to repeat as Shield winner in more than a decade, a marker of how rare sustained regular-season dominance has become in a format that can turn on one bad night in the playoffs. Midfielder Taylor Davila was part of that run too, then capped it by winning USL Championship Player of the Year after posting four goals and nine assists in the Shield-winning campaign.

The Shield also sits apart because the league has long treated it as a prize in its own right, not just a byproduct of playoff seeding. A 2023 league preview named the Tampa Bay Rowdies, San Antonio FC, Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC and Sacramento Republic FC as contenders, and San Antonio had won the award the season before. That is the point of the trophy: it measures who controlled the longest and hardest stretch of the year, even if the postseason still decides the championship. In a format where one save, one penalty or one counterattack can end a title run, the Players’ Shield remains the cleanest way to judge the league’s best regular-season team.
