USL Cup quarterfinal draw sets Tampa Bay-Louisville showdown

The quarterfinal draw sent Tampa Bay Rowdies home to face Louisville City FC, pairing the only perfect group-stage team in the field with the club that finished the cup round with 12 goals. Hartford Athletic, the defending champion, drew a road trip to Charlotte Independence after Charlotte survived Charleston Battery on Matt Levy’s two shootout saves.

The bracket locked in the first knockout round of the third Prinx Tires USL Cup, which includes all 43 clubs from USL Championship and USL League One. The group stage ran from April 25 through July 11, and the field was reduced to seven group winners plus one wild card, with the second-place club on points and goals scored as the first tiebreaker. The quarterfinals are scheduled for Aug. 13, the semifinals for Sept. 9 and the final for the weekend of Oct. 2-4.

Tampa Bay entered the draw at 4-0-0 with 12 points and 10 goals, the only perfect record among the confirmed quarterfinalists. The Rowdies reached that mark with a five-goal outburst against Sarasota Paradise and a 2-0 finish against FC Naples, and they were among the first two clubs to clinch knockout-stage berths alongside Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC. Louisville reached the quarterfinals at 3-0-1 with 11 points and 12 goals after Jansen Wilson helped push it past Lexington SC, setting up the highest-scoring matchup in the round at Al Lang Stadium.

Hartford’s path was tighter. Coffey and Williams scored in the first half against Westchester SC to send Hartford through at 3-0-1 with 10 points and 8 goals, but the draw sent the reigning champion to Charlotte, which advanced through penalties after Levy stopped two Charleston efforts.
