Viandel Pena sold to Tigers as Blue Crabs pipeline keeps rolling
Viandel Pena’s 56-game surge in Southern Maryland ended with Detroit buying his contract, another sign that the Blue Crabs have become a steady stop for players pushing back into affiliated ball. The infielder was the sixth member of the 2026 Blue Crabs to have his deal purchased by an affiliated organization, and Southern Maryland said he was the first player in franchise history to move directly to the Tigers.
The timing only sharpened the point. Southern Maryland had clinched the Atlantic League South Division first-half championship on June 28, securing its first playoff berth since 2022, then added Pena’s sale to Detroit days later. The six contract purchases by MLB organizations were the most in a Blue Crabs season since seven players were signed in 2018, giving the club another measurable marker for the way it has turned Regency Furniture Stadium into a showcase for players with unfinished business in affiliated baseball.

Pena earned the move with production across the board. In 56 games for Southern Maryland, he hit .294 with nine home runs, 19 doubles, 48 RBI, 44 runs scored and 11 stolen bases. He also handled shortstop well enough to post a .988 fielding percentage, while manager Brett Jodie praised his professionalism, work ethic and all-around game. Pena joined the Blue Crabs after being released by the Washington Nationals following spring training, then used his half-season in the Atlantic League to reopen an affiliated opportunity.
His path to Detroit traces back to a long Nationals run. Pena signed with Washington as an international free agent in July 2017, spent seven seasons in the organization and reached Triple-A Rochester. Baseball America had already identified him as a Florida Complex League top-20 prospect in 2019, and the Blue Crabs said he also earned a place on Washington’s top-30 prospect list after winning the 2019 Gulf Coast League batting title with a .359 average.

The move also added a new footnote to Pena’s career. StatsCrew lists him as Viandel Alexis Pena, born Nov. 22, 2000, in Azua, Dominican Republic, a switch hitter who throws right-handed. It also shows his affiliated stops with Washington, Fredericksburg, Wilmington, Harrisburg and Rochester before Southern Maryland put him back on the radar. For the Blue Crabs, the sale was their 82nd contract purchase in franchise history, and for Pena it was the latest proof that a strong Atlantic League stretch can still carry a player straight back to the majors’ pipeline.
